I was fishing yesterday and had just cast my line out. I was slowly retrieving my lure when suddenly a Snowy Egret lifted off shore and flew right into my line. I couldn't see where the line had caught the bird, but I could tell that he was tangled in some way so I immediately cut my line. The bird landed on the water and started flapping its wings like it might have the line wrapped around them. I ran into the house, grabbed the paddles for the canoe and was going to paddle over to see if there was some way to assist the bird when suddenly... dum de dum dum... along came Fluffy, our local alligator, swimming faster than I've ever seen him swim before.
About 10 metres before he reached the egret he dived, and all went quiet. All of a sudden he surfaced with his mouth wide open and chomped the egret and with a huge swirl of water and a big splooosh disappeared below the water.
All went quiet again. Nothing happened for about 30 seconds, then Fluffy slowly surfaced with the egret in his mouth, and slowly, very slowly, swam past me - white feathers sticking out both sides of his mouth.
It was probably a damned good thing that I didn't reach the egret before the gator did or my arm might have been a gator snack.
